How to Set Up a Professional Business Email in Fiji (And Where to Get Your Domain)

There's a version of this conversation I've had dozens of times with Fijian business owners: they've been operating for years, they have a solid reputation locally, they do good work — and they're still handing out a Gmail or Yahoo address on their business card.

It's a small thing. But it signals to clients that certain basics haven't been sorted. A professional email — you@yourbusiness.com instead of yourbusiness123@gmail.com — is one of the cheapest and most impactful credibility upgrades you can make. This guide walks you through exactly how to get there.

Step 1: Get a Domain Name

Before you can have a professional email, you need a domain — the yourbusiness.com or yourbusiness.com.fj part of the address. If you already have a website, you likely have one. If not, this is where you start.

.com.fj vs .com — Which Should You Register?

.com.fj is Fiji's official country-code domain. It signals immediately that you're a Fijian business, which builds local trust. It's administered by USP IT Services through the FJ Domain Registry. You can register directly through their portal or through accredited registrars like Instra Corporation or 101domain.

.com is the global standard. It's easier and usually cheaper to register, and works better if you're positioning yourself for regional or international clients. You can register a .com through international registrars like Namecheap (around USD $10–12/year) or Cloudflare Registrar (at-cost pricing, no markup).

Which to pick? If your clients are primarily local Fijian businesses, .com.fj carries more weight. If you're working regionally or want a cleaner brand, .com is fine. Many businesses register both and redirect one to the other — it's not expensive to do.

Step 2: Choose Your Email Host

Once you have a domain, you need to decide where your email actually lives. Here are the main options available to businesses in Fiji:

Microsoft 365 (Outlook)

Best for: Businesses that need the full Microsoft stack — Word, Excel, Teams, SharePoint, OneDrive.

If your team already uses Microsoft products or you're in an industry where Word/Excel is standard, this is the most cohesive choice.

Google Workspace (Gmail with Custom Domain)

Best for: Small teams who live in Google Docs, Sheets, and Drive.

Google Workspace Starter is around USD $6/user/month. The interface is identical to regular Gmail — just with your own domain instead of @gmail.com. You also get Google Drive, Docs, Sheets, Meet, and Calendar included. If your team is already comfortable with Google's ecosystem, the learning curve is essentially zero.

Zoho Mail

Best for: Very small businesses or sole traders who need professional email without the cost.

Zoho Mail has a free plan for up to 5 users (5GB storage each) with custom domain support — making it the most accessible entry point. Their paid Lite plan is around USD $1/user/month for more storage and features. It's not as feature-rich as Microsoft or Google, but for a small operation that just needs email, it does the job well.

Hosting Provider Email (cPanel)

Best for: Businesses that already have web hosting and want the simplest possible setup.

Most Fijian web hosting packages (Vodafone, Pacific Hosting, etc.) include email hosting through cPanel at no extra cost. You can create you@yourdomain.com addresses and access them through webmail or connect to an email client. The downside: reliability and deliverability are lower than dedicated email providers, storage is limited, and spam filtering is basic. It's a starting point, not a long-term solution.

Which One Is Right for Your Business?

You're a sole trader or have 1–3 staff: Start with Zoho Mail's free plan. It costs nothing, works well, and you can migrate to a paid platform later as you grow.

You're a small business (4–20 staff) already using Google products: Google Workspace is the natural fit. Familiar interface, solid reliability, reasonable price.

You're a small-to-medium business using Microsoft products, or in a formal industry (finance, legal, property): Microsoft 365 is worth the price. The integration with Word, Excel, and Teams is seamless, and Outlook carries professional weight in formal business contexts.

You're currently using hosting provider email: It's worth upgrading. Deliverability issues (emails landing in spam) and limited storage become real problems as your business grows.

Step 3: Connect Your Domain to Your Email Host

Once you've registered your domain and chosen your email host, the final step is pointing your domain to your email provider. This involves updating your domain's MX records — essentially telling the internet "email for this domain should go here."

Every major email provider (Microsoft, Google, Zoho) gives you the exact records to add, and it's done through wherever you registered your domain.
